2021-0612 Saturday. 847 AM. Over the years, I've tried, time and again to get into soccer. It's gone slowly, with inconsistent results. Ultimately, I really want to like soccer because it's kinda like big, slow hockey. I mean, five billion people can't be wrong, right.

I've been told by my British dfs (daily fantasy sports) buddy that this tournament is like the World Cup, but just for European national teams, and that it's a big deal. Since I'm really into live, competitive sporting matchups and nothing else was on this morning, I decided to turn it on. ESPN and ABC are broadcasting the three games today. Wales and Switzerland played this morning, early. As I write this, Denmark and Finland are about to start their matchup, and Belgium takes on Russia this afternoon. Since I'm damn near addicted to fantasy sports, I threw together a lineup on Draft Kings for the three-game slate. Since it was early, my bride and children were still in bed, so I was able to watch it.

My limited research indicated the Swiss team was favored to win, so I did the contrarian thing and put three Welsh players in my DK lineup and zero Swiss guys. Danny Ward defended the Welsh goal and only allowed one, saving three. Embolo, who ended with Player of the Game recognition, scored the opening goal of the game for Switzerland. However, in the second half, one of my guys, Welsh forward, Kieffer Moore scored a goal to even it up. After five minutes of stoppage time, the game ended in a tie, something that's apparently common in soccer.
To finish this column on European soccer, I feel it's important to explain my crude United States jargon. Player of the Game is Star of the Match, I guess. Game means match. Field is pitch. Tie is our word for draw. Play to win, already... This is bakesHere.
